Manufacturer description

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

*Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking control

Dapol Stroudley Terrier A1 Class ‘Bodiam’ KESR blue 0‑6‑0 tank locomotive, ready for DCC with an 18‑pin decoder. It is a limited‑edition model from the Rails of Sheffield range, supplied in a pristine finish with a blue livery and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor. The locomotive accepts power via all wheels, fits a minimum curve of 371 mm (1st radius), and uses NEM/tension‑lock couplings. It is built to represent the pre‑grouping London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 “Terrier”, designed by William Stroudley and originally built at Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880. Only 50 of the full‑size class were constructed; ten survive in preservation.

The model includes a die‑cast chassis and running plates, a detailed plastic moulded body, flickering firebox and die‑cast wheels with sprung centres for improved traction and electrical pick‑up. It is DCC and sound ready, with a removable body exposing a NEXT‑18 socket, and factory‑fitted sound recordings of Kent & East Sussex Railway locomotive 32678. RealDrive braking control is available on sound‑fitted versions.

Dapol part number 4S‑010‑002. Designed for use on the Kent & East Sussex Railway, the model accurately portrays the historic 0‑6‑0T locomotive that served main‑line duties before being displaced by newer engines and electrification, later operating on branch lines and shunting until the early 1960s.
