Manufacturer description

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

*Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking control

Dapol’s Stroudley Terrier A1 Class “Boxhill” is a limited‑edition, OO‑gauge 0‑6‑0 tank locomotive, model number 4S‑010‑001D. It is finished in a pristine umber livery, carries running number 82 and is fitted with DCC, sound and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor. The chassis and running plate are die‑cast, the body is plastic, and die‑cast wheels with sprung centres provide improved electrical pick‑up and traction. A removable body gives access to a NEXT‑18 socket, and factory‑fitted sound uses Dapol’s recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway, with RealDrive braking control on sound‑fitted units.

The model represents the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 “Terrier” class designed by William Stroudley. The original locomotives were built at Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880, with 50 produced in total. They were originally employed on the main London lines, later relegated to branch‑line duties, shunting and non‑revenue work, and remained in service until the 1960s. The final member of the class was withdrawn on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on 11 November 1963; ten examples survive in preservation.

Key technical details include a minimum curve radius of 371 mm (first radius), steam motive power, and the capability to model most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW types, including two cab/bunker styles and two smokebox/boiler configurations. The model also features a flickering firebox, separately fitted parts and optional wooden or metal brake rigging where appropriate.
