Locomotive background Information
More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.
With all the experience Dapol has gained from making the award winning O Gauge version of the A1 / A1X Terrier it is fully anticipated that this project will progress very quickly. Decorated samples are expected to be available in time for Warley 2018.
General Specification
The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/buner types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal break brake rigging where appropriate.
* Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Dapol A1 No 82 “Boxhill”, a Stroudley‑improved locomotive in green finish, is supplied as a limited‑edition model from the Rails of Sheffield range. It is an OO‑gauge (1:76) replica, fully fitted with DCC control and on‑board sound. The model is finished in pristine condition with an umber livery and bears the running number 82. It carries the Dapol part number 4S‑010‑001S and represents the pre‑grouping London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1 “Terrier” class.
The real A1 class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 units were built at the Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880. Originally used on main‑line passenger services, the locomotives were later displaced by larger engines and the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Most later served on branch lines and for shunting duties, remaining in regular use until the early 1960s; the final Terrier was withdrawn from the Hayling Island Line on 30 November 1963. Ten examples have survived into preservation.
The model features a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic moulded body and numerous separately fitted components. Wheels are die‑cast with sprung centres for improved electrical contact and traction. Power is provided by a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor, and all wheels are electrically pick‑up. DCC and sound are ready via a removable body exposing a NEXT‑18 socket; factory‑installed sound uses Dapol’s recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway and includes RealDrive braking. The tooling permits variations of the A1, A1X and IOW types, including two cab/bunker styles and two smokebox/boiler configurations.
