More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.
Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.
*Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking control
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Terrier 0-6-0T "Bodiam" 3 in Kent & East Sussex Blue
Dapol Stroudley Terrier A1 Class LBSC (ex Gipsyhill) 0‑6‑0 tank locomotive, model number 4S‑010‑009, is a limited‑edition OO‑gauge model released by Rails of Sheffield. It represents the pre‑grouping London, Brighton and South Coast Railway A1/ A1X Terrier class, built at Brighton Works between 1872 and 1880. The model is painted in the original LBSCR livery and is ready to accept an 18‑pin DCC decoder; a NEXT‑18 socket is accessible through a removable body panel.
The locomotive features a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic moulded body with flickering firebox, die‑cast wheels with sprung centres for all‑wheel electrical pickup, and a powerful five‑pole skew‑wound motor. It is supplied with a pre‑fitted speaker and is DCC and sound ready; factory‑fitted versions use Dapol’s own recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway and include RealDrive braking control.
Technical specifications include a minimum curve radius of 1, NEM/Tension‑lock couplings, all‑wheel power pickup, and the ability to model both A1, A1X and IOW variants with two cab/bunker types and two smokebox/boiler options. The model is suitable for use on a minimum radius of 1 track and reflects the historical Terrier’s service from main‑line duties to branch‑line shunting, with the final original locomotive withdrawn on 30/11/1963.
