Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Rectangular tanks were a very common sight in the latter part of the 1800s and up to 1930, serving Britain’s booming chemical industry and in conveying tar by-products from the numerous municipal gas works found in every large town and city.
Their rectangular shape was dictated by the metal forming technology of the day, where only at sheets were available, which were simply riveted together. At the end of the 1920s the development of the ability to accurately roll plate, enabled safer cylindrical tanks to be manufactured and rectangular tanks became obsolete.

Dapol Rectangular Tank – Rimer Bros 7 (Weathered) is an OO gauge model of a historic tank wagon. It is finished in a weathered livery, measures 73 mm in length, 33 mm in width and 31 mm in height, and runs on NEM or tension‑lock couplings. The minimum curve radius is 1 and the livery represents the former Rimer Bros company. It carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑032‑022 and is intended to depict the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
Rectangular tank wagons were a common feature of British freight traffic from the later 1800s to about 1930, chiefly used by the chemical industry and for transporting tar by‑products from municipal gas works. Their shape resulted from the sheet‑metal forming techniques of the time, with plates riveted together. The advent of reliable plate‑rolling in the late 1920s allowed cylindrical tanks to be produced, rendering the rectangular design obsolete.
The model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, accurately applied Rimer Bros livery and finely moulded bodywork. It includes NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, making it suitable for use with a range of OO gauge rolling stock.
Overall dimensions (including buffers) are 73 mm long, 33 mm wide and 31 mm high.
