Prototype Era
Era 3 (1923 to 1947) The Big Four (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR)
Rectangular tanks were a very common sight in the latter part of the 1800s and up to 1930, serving Britain’s booming chemical industry and in conveying tar by-products from the numerous municipal gas works found in every large town and city.
Their rectangular shape was dictated by the metal forming technology of the day, where only at sheets were available, which were simply riveted together. At the end of the 1920s the development of the ability to accurately roll plate, enabled safer cylindrical tanks to be manufactured and rectangular tanks became obsolete.

Dapol's OO gauge Wm Butler & Co Rectangular Tank Wagon No.64 is a model of a type of wagon that was once a common sight in the UK. Rectangular tanks were used to transport chemicals and tar by-products from the late 1800s to the early 1930s.
These wagons were characterised by their rectangular shape, which was a result of the metal forming technology of the time. However, with the development of rolling plate technology, cylindrical tanks became safer and eventually replaced the rectangular design.
The model features a high level of detail, including profiled wheels, accurately applied livery and a highly detailed body moulding. The wagons are designed to be used with NEM pocket couplings, which provide a secure and self-centring connection.
The model's measurements are as follows: length over buffer 73mm, width 33mm and height 31mm. The model is suitable for use on any layout depicting the Big Four period, which includes the LNER, LMS, GWR and SR.
