Manufacturer description

Rectangular tanks were a very common sight in the latter part of the 1800s and up to 1930, serving Britain’s booming chemical industry and in conveying tar by-products from the numerous municipal gas works found in every large town and city.

Their rectangular shape was dictated by the metal forming technology of the day, where only at sheets were available, which were simply riveted together. At the end of the 1920s the development of the ability to accurately roll plate, enabled safer cylindrical tanks to be manufactured and rectangular tanks became obsolete.

Dapol's Rimer Bros Rectangular Tank Wagon is a model of a type of wagon that was once common in the UK's chemical industry. These wagons were used to transport tar by-products from municipal gas works in towns and cities. They featured a rectangular shape, which was a result of the metal forming technology available at the time, where only flat sheets of metal were used and riveted together.

The rectangular tank wagons were eventually replaced by cylindrical tanks in the 1930s, as the technology to accurately roll plate became available. This model, however, is a representation of the earlier type of wagon.

The model itself is highly detailed and features a number of accurate features, including profiled wheels and an accurately applied livery. The body moulding is also highly detailed. The wagon is designed to be compatible with standard OO gauge track and features NEM pockets with self-centring couplings.

The model measures 73mm in length, 33mm in width, and 31mm in height, and is suitable for use on curves with a minimum radius of 1.
