Manufacturer description

Rectangular tanks were a very common sight in the latter part of the 1800s and up to 1930, serving Britain’s booming chemical industry and in conveying tar by-products from the numerous municipal gas works found in every large town and city.

Their rectangular shape was dictated by the metal forming technology of the day, where only at sheets were available, which were simply riveted together. At the end of the 1920s the development of the ability to accurately roll plate, enabled safer cylindrical tanks to be manufactured and rectangular tanks became obsolete.

Dapol Rectangular Tank Butler 73 is an OO gauge model in a weathered finish, measuring 73 mm length, 33 mm width and 31 mm height. It carries the Wm Butler & Co livery, has a minimum curve radius of 1, and uses NEM/Tension lock couplings. The manufacturer part number is 4F‑032‑016 and the model represents the pre‑grouping period.

Rectangular tank wagons were common from the late 1800s until about 1930, used in Britain’s chemical industry and for transporting tar by‑products from municipal gas works. The shape resulted from the sheet‑metal forming techniques of the era; the advent of accurate plate‑rolling in the late 1920s allowed safer cylindrical tanks to replace them.

The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, and a finely moulded body. It includes NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, making it a suitable addition to a period rolling‑stock collection.
