Manufacturer description

Rectangular tanks were a very common sight in the latter part of the 1800s and up to 1930, serving Britain’s booming chemical industry and in conveying tar by-products from the numerous municipal gas works found in every large town and city.

Their rectangular shape was dictated by the metal forming technology of the day, where only at sheets were available, which were simply riveted together. At the end of the 1920s the development of the ability to accurately roll plate, enabled safer cylindrical tanks to be manufactured and rectangular tanks became obsolete.

The Dapol OO gauge weathered tar wagon is a model of a rectangular tank wagon used in the transport of tar by-products from municipal gas works in the early 20th century. The model is designed to represent the Big Four railway companies, which operated during this period.

The rectangular tank wagon was a common sight on Britain's railways from the late 19th century to the 1930s, serving the country's growing chemical industry. The development of new metal forming technology led to the introduction of safer cylindrical tank wagons, making the rectangular design obsolete.

The model features profiled wheels, accurately applied livery, highly detailed body moulding, and NEM pockets with self-centring couplings. The wagon is weathered, giving it a realistic appearance.
