Exclusive to Rails of Sheffield
PrototypeThe British Rail Class 88 is a type of mainline mixed traffic electro-diesel locomotive manufactured by Stadler Rail for Direct Rail Services (DRS) in the United Kingdom. The locomotive is part of the Stadler Euro Dual family. It is the first dual-mode locomotive in the UK to use the 25 kV AC electrification.
Amid the fulfillment of DRS' order for the Class 68, Stadler's team proposed the development of a dual-mode locomotive that could be alternatively powered by an onboard diesel engine or via electricity supplied from overhead lines (OHLE). Having been impressed by the concept, DRS opted to place an order for ten Class 88s during September 2013. Having been developed alongside the Class 68, considerable similarities are shared between the two locomotives, amounting to roughly 70 percent of all components being shared.
Features Include:* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.
Special commissions are usually only available new from the commissioning organisation, and may well have sold out on pre-order before they even end up listed here! But you may be able to find used items on marketplace or auction websites.

Dapol Class 88 ‘Genesis’ 88003 is a limited‑edition DRS electro‑diesel locomotive model released exclusively for the Rails of Sheffield range. It represents the contemporary British Rail Class 88, a main‑line mixed‑traffic electro‑diesel locomotive built by Stadler Rail for Direct Rail Services. The prototype locomotive entered service following a DRS order placed in September 2013 for ten units and is the first UK dual‑mode loco to operate on 25 kV AC overhead electrification, sharing roughly 70 percent of its components with the Class 68.
The model features a finely moulded body with detailed fittings, authentic liveries and printed nameplates, sprung buffers and a heavy die‑cast chassis with all‑wheel drive. Mechanical details include a smooth 5‑pole motor, twin flywheels, cast wheels with fine relief, NEM coupling pockets and a Plux22 decoder socket.
Lighting is comprehensive, offering white marker and head‑lights, red tail lights, halo lights (DCC only) and cab lights. Both DCC and DC users can control lights independently, and the pantograph is servo‑controlled in DCC and manually posable in DC. Optional DCC fitting and a sound package provide authentic electric and diesel noises sourced in cooperation with DRS, selectable via a function key.
Key specifications: DCC fitting service not applicable, interior lighting present, class designation Class 88, manufacturer part number 4D‑088‑002, and the period represented is the current era.
