Prototype

The British Rail Class 88 is a type of mainline mixed traffic electro-diesel locomotive manufactured by Stadler Rail for Direct Rail Services (DRS) in the United Kingdom. The locomotive is part of the Stadler Euro Dual family. It is the first dual-mode locomotive in the UK to use the 25 kV AC electrification.

Amid the fulfillment of DRS' order for the Class 68, Stadler's team proposed the development of a dual-mode locomotive that could be alternatively powered by an onboard diesel engine or via electricity supplied from overhead lines (OHLE). Having been impressed by the concept, DRS opted to place an order for ten Class 88s during September 2013. Having been developed alongside the Class 68, considerable similarities are shared between the two locomotives, amounting to roughly 70 percent of all components being shared.

Dapol Class 88 ‘Revolution’ 88001 is a limited‑edition DRS electro‑diesel locomotive model released exclusively for the Rails of Sheffield range. The model carries the manufacturer part number 4D‑088‑001 and includes interior lighting. It is offered without a DCC fitting service.

The prototype represents the British Rail Class 88, a mainline mixed‑traffic electro‑diesel locomotive built by Stadler Rail for Direct Rail Services. It belongs to the Stadler Euro Dual family and is the first dual‑mode locomotive in the United Kingdom to operate on 25 kV AC overhead electrification.

Stadler proposed a dual‑mode design alongside its Class 68 programme and DRS placed an order for ten Class 88 units on 13/09/2013. About seventy percent of the components are shared with the Class 68, reflecting a high degree of commonality between the two types.

Key features of the Dapol model include a finely moulded body with separate detail parts, authentic liveries and printed nameplates, sprung buffers, a heavy die‑cast chassis with all‑wheel drive, a smooth 5‑pole motor, twin flywheels, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colour, and standard NEM coupling pockets. The model uses the latest Plux22 decoder socket, offers comprehensive lighting (white headlamps, red tail lights, halo lights in DCC mode and cab lights) that can be independently controlled in both DCC and DC, a servo‑controlled pantograph in DCC (posable in DC), and optional DCC and sound fittings. The sound package provides authentic DRS‑recorded electric and diesel noises, selectable via a function key.
