The Mk3a coach design was introduced by British Rail in 1975 for use on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston. The coaches were designed for loco-hauled use and have since been used across many parts of the network. Many of these coaches remain in use today.

Oxford Rail plans to produce the Mk3a coaches as part of a series, with each model featuring a correctly numbered coach from a specific depot. This will allow modellers to create a full train service by adding future releases.
