Manufacturer description
By 1934, the Southern Railway recognised that the short ex-LSWR stock was in need of some major attention as it was nearing the end of its working life. Much of it was built on wooden underframes, whilst some was still gas lit and so a program of refurbishment was proposed and undertaken under Works Order (HOO No.) L801 of March 1934 and Works Order (HOO No.) L852A of March 1935.

Hornby Southern Railway 58‑foot Maunsell rebuilt six‑compartment brake composite (model number 6403 “Set 44”) is a 4 mm scale OO gauge carriage. It is painted in SR green, measures 246 mm long and carries NEM couplings. The chassis is supplied with a British Railways‑style brake composite coach body, marked with the running number 6403 and the manufacturer part number R4794.

The prototype represented by the model is a former London and South Western Railway 48‑foot carriage that was rebuilt under the direction of Richard Maunsell after the Southern Railway took over in 1923. By March 1934 the Southern Railway had identified the ageing ex‑LSWR stock – many examples still had wooden underframes and gas lighting – as needing major work. A refurbishment programme was authorised under Works Order (HOO No.) L801 of March 1934 and a further order (HOO No.) L852A of March 1935, resulting in the rebuilt “Maunsell” coaches.

The model depicts a carriage from the period of the British “Big Four” railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR) and is finished in the period‑appropriate SR green livery.
