Manufacturer description

6212 Duchess of Kent entered traffic on 21 October 1935, allocated to Camden shed and fitted with a riveted 9-ton LMS tender. Oddly, out of all the Princess Royals built at Crewe, 6212 was the only one to be fitted with a Derby style smokebox door, but by 1939 this had been removed.

Spread across three different allocation periods, 6212 Duchess of Kent spent the majority of its service life running out of Crewe North and was finally withdrawn from service while at this shed at the beginning of October 1961.

The Hornby LMS Princess Royal Class model, reference R3854X, represents locomotive 6212 “Duchess of Kent”. It is an OO gauge, 300 mm long, painted in a maroon livery with a maroon chassis. The model features a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor and runs on power picked up from both the driving wheels and the tender wheels. Coupling is via a NEM socket with tension‑lock, and the DCC socket is an 8‑pin NEM 652. It is designed to operate on a minimum radius curve of the second radius (438 mm). The locomotive is fitted with a riveted 9‑ton LMS tender and carries the running number 6212.

The prototype was built by LMS Crewe Works between 1933 and 1935, one of thirteen Princess Royal Class locomotives designed by Sir William Stanier. 6212 entered traffic on 21 October 1935, initially allocated to Camden shed, and was the only Crewe‑built Princess Royal to have a Derby‑style smokebox door, which was removed by 1939. After serving mainly from Crewe North, the locomotive was withdrawn in early October 1961. The model represents the “Big Four” era of British railways (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
