Prototype Era
Era 2 (1875 to 1923) Pre-grouping
The London and South Western Railway B4 class was a class of 0-4-0 tank engines originally designed for station piloting and dock shunting. They were later used extensively in Southampton Docks for nearly half a century.
The locomotives were designed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) Locomotive Superintendent William Adams. They were unusual in having inside Stephenson valve gear but outside cylinders and coal bunkers on the footplate inside the cab. The class were originally built with Adams's design of stovepipe chimney, although these were later replaced by a lipped version, as on our model, designed by Adams' successor, Dugald Drummond. Our model is an example with an original cab, but some examples also had cut away cabs to improve visibility. They were designed for shunting in locations with a sharp curves, such as the dockyard at Devonport and as pilots at the major stations.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

L&SWR B4 0-4-0T 'Caen' Brown 90 Steam Locomotive
The Dapol OO gauge London and South Western Railway (LSWR) 0-4-0 B4 steam locomotive is a model of a historic locomotive class. The model features a finely moulded body with separately added fine details, and is DCC ready with a 6 pin socket included. DCC fitted versions are also available.
The locomotive is based on the real-life LSWR Class B4, a class of 0-4-0 tank engines built in the late 19th century. Twenty of these engines were ordered by Adams in 1890, with some being transferred to Southampton docks in the early 20th century. The class was taken into British Rail stock in 1948, but many were withdrawn in the following years.
The model measures 98mm in length, 34mm in width, and 48mm in height, and has a minimum radius curve of 1. It features a powerful 5 pole skew wound motor, cast wheels with fine relief and appropriate colouring, and die-cast compensated chassis with all wheel pickup. The model also includes a coupling in NEM / Tension lock style and an accessory bag with spares and optional details.
