Manufacturer description

The London and South Western Railway B4 class was a class of 0-4-0 tank engines originally designed for station piloting and dock shunting. They were later used extensively in Southampton Docks for nearly half a century.

The locomotives were designed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) Locomotive Superintendent William Adams. They were unusual in having inside Stephenson valve gear but outside cylinders and coal bunkers on the footplate inside the cab. The class were originally built with Adams's design of stovepipe chimney, although these were later replaced by a lipped version, as on our model, designed by Adams' successor, Dugald Drummond. Our model is an example with an original cab, but some examples also had cut away cabs to improve visibility. They were designed for shunting in locations with a sharp curves, such as the dockyard at Devonport and as pilots at the major stations.

Dapol's OO gauge LSWR Class B4 0-4-0T locomotive is a highly detailed model of the London and South Western Railway's steam tank locomotive.

The model features a finely moulded body with numerous separately added fine details. It is DCC Ready, with a 6 pin socket included, and DCC fitted models are also available. The locomotive has cast wheels with fine relief and colouring, a die-cast compensated chassis, and all wheel pick up.

The prototype of the locomotive was ordered by Adams in 1890, with 20 engines being built at Nine Elms Works. The design was preferred over a six-coupled version due to the poor condition of goods yards and the sharp curves of certain lines. The locomotives were used at Southampton docks, with some being modified to improve visibility. A total of 25 engines were taken into British Rail stock in 1948, with 11 surviving until withdrawal in the early 1960s.

The model's specifications include a minimum radius curve of 1 inch, and it is available in LSWR Dark Green livery. The locomotive is 98mm in length, 34mm in width, and 48mm in height. An accessory bag is included with the model, containing spares and optional detail parts.
