The London and South Western Railway B4 class was a class of 0-4-0 tank engines originally designed for station piloting and dock shunting. They were later used extensively in Southampton Docks for nearly half a century.
The locomotives were designed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) Locomotive Superintendent William Adams. They were unusual in having inside Stephenson valve gear but outside cylinders and coal bunkers on the footplate inside the cab. The class were originally built with Adams's design of stovepipe chimney, although these were later replaced by a lipped version, as on our model, designed by Adams' successor, Dugald Drummond. Our model is an example with an original cab, but some examples also had cut away cabs to improve visibility. They were designed for shunting in locations with a sharp curves, such as the dockyard at Devonport and as pilots at the major stations.

Dapol LSWR Class B4 Southern Black 0‑4‑0 Tank Locomotive No 87 is an OO gauge model of a London and South Western Railway B4 class tank engine. The model is presented in a pristine black finish with the original running number “87” and represents the period of the British “Big Four” railway companies.
The locomotive measures 99 mm in length, 34 mm in width and 48 mm in height. It is equipped with a 6‑pin DCC ready socket, NEM couplings and a minimum curve radius of 371 mm (1st radius). Power is collected from all wheels and the model runs on a 12 V DC track supply.
Construction features a finely moulded body, cast wheels in the appropriate colour, a tungsten chassis and a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor. The model includes directional lighting, etched grill work, printed external logos and numbering, and a spares bag with additional detailing parts.
The original B4 class was designed by William Adams for station piloting and dock shunting and later used extensively at Southampton Docks. They were characterised by inside Stephenson valve gear, outside cylinders and coal bunkers situated on the footplate inside the cab. Some examples had cut‑away cabs to improve visibility. The model depicts an original cab configuration.
For digital control the recommended decoder is the Imperium 5, which is the only decoder listed as compatible with this model. The decoder can be obtained via the supplied link.
