Manufacturer description

The London and South Western Railway B4 class was a class of 0-4-0 tank engines originally designed for station piloting and dock shunting. They were later used extensively in Southampton Docks for nearly half a century.

The locomotives were designed by the London and South Western Railway (LSWR) Locomotive Superintendent William Adams. They were unusual in having inside Stephenson valve gear but outside cylinders and coal bunkers on the footplate inside the cab. The class were originally built with Adams's design of stovepipe chimney, although these were later replaced by a lipped version, as on our model, designed by Adams' successor, Dugald Drummond. Our model is an example with an original cab, but some examples also had cut away cabs to improve visibility. They were designed for shunting in locations with a sharp curves, such as the dockyard at Devonport and as pilots at the major stations.

The Dapol LSWR Class B4 0-4-0T BR Late Crest 30096 is a model of a steam locomotive representing a member of the London & South Western Railway's B4 class. This class of locomotive was originally designed by William Adams for station piloting and dock shunting, with 25 examples being built between 1891 and 1908.

The B4 class was notable for its unusual design features, including inside Stephenson valve gear and outside cylinders, as well as coal bunkers on the footplate inside the cab. They were used extensively in Southampton Docks for nearly half a century, with some examples being modified with cut-away cabs to improve visibility.

This model from Dapol features a finely moulded body with many optional detailing parts, including etched grills, directional lighting, and finely printed external logos and numbering. It has a coreless motor for smoother operation and all wheel drive and pick up. The model is DCC ready and features NEM couplings.

Key specifications for the model include a length of 98mm, a width of 34mm, and a height of 48mm. The model is suitable for use on 1st radius curves of 371mm or greater, and is designed for use on 12V DC track supply. It is a representation of the locomotive as it appeared in the late BR period, with a black livery and late crest.
