The Turbot bogie ballast wagon was a development from the earlier Bogie Bolster E wagon, which was manufactured in the 1960s and was intended for the transfer of steel.

The wagon, however, after a number of years in use was found to be too short for the continuation of its intended role, but it was found that if a low sided three door body was added, then this new wagon would to be suitable for transporting ballast.

The wagon was nicknamed Turbot and was TOPS classified as YCV bogie ballast wagon. Over 1,000 Turbot wagons were rebuilt by BR Shildon and RFS Engineering at Doncaster between 1982 and 1988 and continued into service until 2002. Turbot wagons have also been modified for use by London Underground.

The Dapol Turbot Bogie Ballast Wagon EWS 978101 is a model railway wagon designed for OO gauge layouts. It represents a Turbot bogie ballast wagon, a type of wagon that was introduced in the 1980s as a development of the earlier Bogie Bolster E wagon.

The Turbot wagon was designed to transport ballast and was built by British Rail's Shildon and Doncaster workshops between 1982 and 1988. Over 1,000 wagons were produced, with some also being modified for use by London Underground. The wagon was nicknamed Turbot and was classified as a YCV bogie ballast wagon by TOPS.

This model features a plastic body and underframe with diecast chassis, spring buffers, and profiled wheels to meet OO gauge society standards. The wagon also includes NEM couplings, pin-point axles, and a highly detailed underframe and bogies. The body is fully detailed, with separately moulded side doors, stanchions, and other features such as door balance springs and arm detailing.

The model is supplied with a number of accessories, including buffer beam pipes, an operating Instanter coupling, and a NEM compatible drawbar. The wagon is finished in pristine condition, with a livery of EWS and a running number of 978101. The minimum recommended radius for this model is 438mm.
