Prototype Era
Era 9 (1995 to 2004) Initial Privatisation
The Turbot bogie ballast wagon was a development from the earlier Bogie Bolster E wagon, which was manufactured in the 1960s and was intended for the transfer of steel.
The wagon, however, after a number of years in use was found to be too short for the continuation of its intended role, but it was found that if a low sided three door body was added, then this new wagon would to be suitable for transporting ballast.
The wagon was nicknamed Turbot and was TOPS classified as YCV bogie ballast wagon. Over 1,000 Turbot wagons were rebuilt by BR Shildon and RFS Engineering at Doncaster between 1982 and 1988 and continued into service until 2002. Turbot wagons have also been modified for use by London Underground.

Turbot Bogie Ballast Wagon EWS Maroon DB978309
The Dapol Turbot Bogie Ballast Wagon EWS 978255 is a model of a railway wagon manufactured in OO gauge. The model is based on the real-life Turbot bogie ballast wagon, which was a development of the Bogie Bolster E wagon used for transporting steel in the 1960s.
The Turbot wagon was introduced in the 1980s as a modified version of the earlier wagon, with a low-sided three-door body added to enable it to carry ballast. Over 1,000 of these wagons were rebuilt between 1982 and 1988, and they remained in service until 2002. Some were also modified for use on the London Underground network.
This model is a highly detailed representation of the Turbot wagon, with a plastic body and underframe, diecast chassis, and spring buffers. The wheels are profiled and blacked to meet the standards of the OO gauge society, and the model features pin-point axles and NEM couplings. The body details include separately moulded side doors and stanchions, interior floor, door and stanchion details, and finely moulded stainless steel details where applicable.
The model is available in EWS livery, with a running number of 978255, and is suitable for use on minimum radius curves of 438mm (2nd). The model comes with a range of accessories, including buffer beam pipes, an operating Instanter coupling, and a NEM compatible drawbar.
