The Turbot bogie ballast wagon was a development from the earlier Bogie Bolster E wagon, which was manufactured in the 1960s and was intended for the transfer of steel.
The wagon, however, after a number of years in use was found to be too short for the continuation of its intended role, but it was found that if a low sided three door body was added, then this new wagon would to be suitable for transporting ballast.
The wagon was nicknamed Turbot and was TOPS classified as YCV bogie ballast wagon. Over 1,000 Turbot wagons were rebuilt by BR Shildon and RFS Engineering at Doncaster between 1982 and 1988 and continued into service until 2002. Turbot wagons have also been modified for use by London Underground.

The Dapol Turbot Bogie Ballast Wagon Engineers Dutch model represents the British Rail Sectorisation era. It is available in a Civil Engineers Dutch livery and is designed to run on OO gauge track. The model features a plastic body and underframe with detailed parts, including separately moulded side doors and stanchions.
The wagon has a diecast chassis and spring buffers, with profiled and blacked wheels to meet the OO gauge society's standards. It also features NEM couplings, which can be removed if required, and UK standard hook and bar couplers.
The model's body is fully detailed, with interior floor, door, and stanchion details, as well as finely moulded and etched stainless steel parts. The underframe is highly detailed, with correct profiled bracing and bogies.
An accessory pack is included with the model, containing buffer beam pipes, an operating Instanter coupling, and a NEM compatible drawbar. This allows modellers to choose whether to use the regular coupling or replace it with the drawbar.
The model has a minimum radius curve of 2 and a scale of 1:76.2 (4mm to 1ft). It is finished in a pristine condition.
