Manufacturer description

To meet the rapid rise in demand for bananas shipped in from the Caribbean, especially constructed steam heated banana vans were manufactured with plywood cladding and insulated bodies that allowed bananas to be shipped in green and ripened en-route.

The Dapol model of the banana van is of a later 1950’s built variant that was steam piped allowing the easy running of interconnected block trains.

Dapol Banana Van NE 158621 is a weathered‑finished OO‑scale model of a British Railways steam‑heated banana van. The locomotive is livery‑finished in LNER grey, with a four‑wheel arrangement and a minimum curve radius of 1. It replicates a van built at BR Wolverton Works between 1959 and 1960, and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑016‑048.

The original vans were constructed with plywood cladding and insulated bodies to transport bananas from the Caribbean, allowing the fruit to be shipped green and to ripen during the journey. The Dapol model represents a later 1950s variant that was steam‑piped for the easy operation of interconnected block trains, and it depicts the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

Features of the model include a highly detailed moulded body, self‑centring NEM pockets, profiled wheels and fine printed livery.
