Manufacturer description
PROTOTYPE

To meet the rapid rise in demand for bananas shipped in from the Caribbean, especially constructed steam heated banana vans were manufactured with plywood cladding and insulated bodies that allowed bananas to be shipped in green and ripened en-route.

The Dapol model of the banana van is of a later 1950’s built variant that was steam piped allowing the easy running of interconnected block trains.

Dapol Banana Van Fyffes Bauxite B881945 is a new release OO‑scale model representing a British Railways banana van in the BR bauxite livery. The model has a 4‑wheel arrangement, a minimum curve radius of 1 and is built to the specifications of a unit constructed at BR Wolverton Works between 1959 and 1960. It carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑016‑041 and depicts the early crest period of British Railways. The prototype was a steam‑heated, plywood‑clad van used to transport bananas from the Caribbean, allowing the fruit to ripen en‑route.

The Dapol version reproduces a later 1950s variant that was equipped with steam piping for the easy operation of interconnected block trains. It is supplied as a highly detailed, moulded body with self‑centring NEM pockets, profiled wheels and finely printed livery. The model is intended for collectors and railway enthusiasts seeking an accurate representation of this specialised freight vehicle.
