Manufacturer description

The British Rail Class 73 is a British electro-diesel locomotive. The type is unusual in that it can operate from the Southern Region's 650/750 V DC third-rail or an on-board diesel engine to allow it to operate on non-electrified routes. This makes it very versatile, although the diesel engine produces less power than is available from the third-rail supply so the locomotives are rarely operated outside of the former Southern Region of British Rail.

Following the withdrawal and scrapping of the more powerful Class 74 electro-diesels in 1977, the Class 73 was unique on the British railway network until the introduction of the Class 88 electro-diesels in 2017).

The Dapol Class 73 JB GB Railfreight Battle of Britain 73109 Diesel Locomotive is a OO gauge model of the British Class 73 electro-diesel locomotive. The model is designed to represent the locomotive in a GB Railfreight livery.

The model features a finely moulded body with etched grills, directional lighting, and finely printed external logos and numbering. Other details include cast wheels in the appropriate colour to match the livery, sprung buffers, all wheel pickup and drive, and a coreless motor for smoother operation.

The model is DCC Ready, with a 21 pin socket and NEM coupling pockets. It also features twin brass fly wheels and comes with a spares bag containing additional detailing parts.

The model measures 213mm in length, 34mm in width, and 49mm in height. It has a minimum radius curve requirement of Radius 2 and is suitable for use on 12V DC track.

The Class 73 was a unique locomotive in the British railway network, operating from the Southern Region's 650/750 V DC third-rail or its on-board diesel engine. The model is a representation of the locomotive's versatility, but it is worth noting that the diesel engine produces less power than the third-rail supply, limiting its use to the former Southern Region of British Rail.
