Manufacturer description

The British Rail Class 73 is a British electro-diesel locomotive. The type is unusual in that it can operate from the Southern Region's 650/750 V DC third-rail or an on-board diesel engine to allow it to operate on non-electrified routes. This makes it very versatile, although the diesel engine produces less power than is available from the third-rail supply so the locomotives are rarely operated outside of the former Southern Region of British Rail.

Following the withdrawal and scrapping of the more powerful Class 74 electro-diesels in 1977, the Class 73 was unique on the British railway network until the introduction of the Class 88 electro-diesels in 2017).

The Dapol Class 73 JB Intercity Executive 73136 Diesel Locomotive is a OO gauge model of a British Rail Class 73 electro-diesel locomotive. This model is designed to represent a locomotive from the Intercity Executive livery and features a range of details including etched grills, directional lighting, and finely printed external logos and numbering.

The model is DCC fitted, allowing for digital control of the locomotive's functions. It features a finely moulded body, cast wheels, sprung buffers, and all-wheel pick up and drive. The locomotive also includes cab lighting and directional lighting, a coreless motor for smooth operation, and NEM coupling pockets.

The specifications of the model include a Class 73 wheel configuration, a Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, and a track supply of 12V DC. The model measures 213mm in length, 34mm in width, and 49mm in height. A spares bag is also included, containing additional detailing parts.

The British Rail Class 73 is a unique type of locomotive that can operate from both third-rail and diesel power, making it versatile for modelling a range of scenarios. However, it is worth noting that the model represents a locomotive from the British Rail Sectorisation period, which ended in 1994.
