Manufacturer description

On 22nd March 1991, another pair of Class 60s was made ready for collection, including 60051, which carried Petroleum sector decals. The locomotive was named after the Scottish scientist “Mary Somerville.”
Initially based at Cardiff Canton Depot in South Wales, 60051 was unusual in that it kept its Petroleum sector markings right through the shadow franchise period. It was later painted directly into the second variation of EWS livery in 1997.
An early casualty, 60051 was stored at Toton in April 2010, where it remains to this day.

The Accurascale Class 60 60051 'Mary Sommerville' Railfreight Petroleum Sector Diesel Locomotive is a model of a Class 60 locomotive, designed to represent the period of British Rail Sectorisation. The Class 60 was the last British-designed and built diesel electric locomotive, consisting of 100 units constructed in just over 18 months. The locomotives were built for heavy freight work and were operated by several companies, including Railfreight Petroleum, before being acquired by EWS in 1996.

The Accurascale model of the Class 60 is the result of extensive research and data collection from 3D scans, surveys, and original drawings. The company has consulted with individuals who have worked on the commissioning and maintenance of the real Class 60 locomotives, allowing them to develop a comprehensive suite of tooling for the model.

The model features a 825g weight, which enables the powerful 5-pole motor and all-wheel drive to haul heavy loads. It includes a complex lighting system, including radiator room and control desk lighting, as well as an Accurathrash speaker. The model also features die-cast metal chassis, OO gauge wheels, and separately applied etched metal and plastic detail parts.

The model is DCC sound-equipped, with a power pack capacitor for uninterrupted power and a customised dual-speaker technology for a realistic sound experience. It also features a hall sensor for a flange squeal effect and high-performance traction, including a five-pole motor with two flywheels and all-wheel drive and pickup. The lighting pack includes directional lighting, switchable red and white marker lights, and separately switched cab lighting.
