The Oxford Toad Brake Van in GWR 4 Wheel Planked (early) Paddington livery is a model representing a classic piece of British railway history. The model features the iconic GWR grey livery and is finished in a pristine condition.
The GWR Toad Brake Van was introduced in January 1894 and became a familiar sight on Britain's railways. The nickname 'Toad' originated from the GWR's telegraphic code for a brake van, with each model allocated a unique diagram in the AA series.
The vans were painted in various colours, including GWR Grey and Departmental Yellow, with some models displaying town names on the sides to indicate their destination. A distinctive feature of these vans was the large guard compartment, which spanned three-quarters of the chassis, and a veranda covering the remaining quarter. This design allowed the shunter or guard to ride on the outside during shunting movements and journeys.
This model is part of the Oxford Rail product range and is scaled to OO gauge. It measures 107mm in length and is suitable for modelling the railways of the Big Four era, which spanned from the 1920s to the 1940s.
