Manufacturer description

The British Railways Standard Mark 2 coach was first introduced in 1963 and the semi-integral construction dispensed with a separate underframe, giving the body greater strength and stiffness than the previous BR Standard Mk.1 stock.

Certified for 100mph running, this was later increased to 110mph and the design of the coach evolved over the next ten years, culminating in the Mk.2F design that was built between 1973 and 1975; a stop gap measure produced until the British Rail Mk.3 coach could be introduced into service.

Virgin Trains used the Mk.2Fs, along with Mk.3s, on cross-country and mainline services right up until locomotive hauled services were curtailed.

Hornby Virgin Trains Mk2F Brake Standard Open (model number 9523) is an OO gauge model measuring 268 mm in length. The coach is painted in a red and black livery and carries the running number 9523. It is fitted with NEM / tension‑lock couplings and is capable of negotiating a minimum radius curve of 2 units.

The model represents a British Railways Mark 2F Brake Standard Open coach built by British Rail Engineering Limited between 1973 and 1975. The original Mark 2 design was introduced on 01/03/1963, featuring semi‑integral construction that eliminated a separate underframe, giving the body greater strength and stiffness than the earlier Mk 1 stock. The Mk 2F variant was certified for 100 mph operation, later raised to 110 mph, and served as a stop‑gap solution until the Mk 3 coach entered service.

Virgin Trains operated Mk 2F coaches, alongside Mk 3 units, on cross‑country and mainline services up to the withdrawal of locomotive‑hauled services. The Hornby model is intended to represent the initial privatisation period of Virgin Trains.

Manufacturer part number for the model is R4945A. The coach type is classified as BSO (Brake Standard Open) and is coloured predominantly red.
