Manufacturer description

The British Railways Standard Mark 2 coach was first introduced in 1963 and the semi-integral construction dispensed with a separate underframe, giving the body greater strength and stiffness than the previous BR Standard Mk.1 stock.

Certified for 100mph running, this was later increased to 110mph and the design of the coach evolved over the next ten years, culminating in the Mk.2F design that was built between 1973 and 1975; a stop gap measure produced until the British Rail Mk.3 coach could be introduced into service.

Virgin Trains used the Mk.2Fs, along with Mk.3s, on cross-country and mainline services right up until locomotive hauled services were curtailed.

Hornby Virgin Trains Mk2F Standard Open 5946 is a 00 gauge model coach measuring 268 mm in length. The model is painted in the Virgin Trains red and black livery, carries the running number 5946 and is supplied with NEM and tension‑lock couplings. It represents a British Railways Mark 2F standard open coach, classified as SO, and bears the manufacturer part number R4943A.

The original British Rail Mark 2 coaches entered service in 1963, featuring a semi‑integral construction that omitted a separate underframe, thereby increasing body strength and stiffness compared with the earlier Mk 1 stock. Designed by BREL and built by British Rail Engineering Limited between 1963 and 1975, the Mk 2F variant was produced from 1973 to 1975 as an interim design before the introduction of the Mk 3 coach. The coaches were certified for 100 mph running, later raised to 110 mph.

Virgin Trains employed Mk 2F coaches, alongside Mk 3s, on cross‑country and mainline services during the initial privatisation period, continuing in use until locomotive‑hauled services were reduced. The Hornby model reflects this era of operation.
