Manufacturer description

The British Railways Standard Mark 2 coach was first introduced in 1963 and the semi-integral construction dispensed with a separate underframe, giving the body greater strength and stiffness than the previous BR Standard Mk.1 stock.

Certified for 100mph running, this was later increased to 110mph and the design of the coach evolved over the next ten years, culminating in the Mk.2F design that was built between 1973 and 1975; a stop gap measure produced until the British Rail Mk.3 coach could be introduced into service.

Virgin Trains used the Mk.2Fs, along with Mk.3s, on cross-country and mainline services right up until locomotive hauled services were curtailed.

Hornby Virgin Trains Mk2F Standard Open 5945 is an OO gauge model coach, painted in Virgin Trains red and black livery. The model measures 268 mm in length and is fitted with NEM/Tension‑lock couplings. It carries the running number 5945 and represents a British Railways Mark 2F Standard Open coach, a type built by British Rail Engineering Limited between 1973 and 1975.

The real Mark 2 coaches were introduced in 1963 with a semi‑integral construction that eliminated a separate underframe, giving the body greater strength and stiffness than the earlier Mark 1 stock. Initially certified for 100 mph, the design was later upgraded to 110 mph. The Mk2F was a stop‑gap model that remained in service until the newer Mk 3 coaches entered operation.

Virgin Trains employed both Mk2F and Mk3 coaches on cross‑country and mainline services until locomotive‑hauled services were reduced. This model, part number R4943, depicts the initial privatisation era of British rail, and is capable of navigating a minimum radius of 2 gauge circles.
