The prototype, Peckett 1678, was built by Peckett & Sons in 1927 for the Sherwood Colliery Company Limited and entered service as locomotive No. 4. After the nationalisation of the coal mines in 1947 the locomotive passed to the National Coal Board’s East Midlands Division (Area 2). It was registered with the Railway Executive for possible main‑line use in 1960 and remained in colliery service until its withdrawal in August 1969. The model represents the period of the “Big Four” railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).
