Prototype Eras
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
Era 8 (1983 to 1994) British Rail Sectorisation
Built in 1961 by Newton Chambers, these unusual looking coaches were designed to carry up to 6 cars per coach (4 on the upper deck and 2 in the well between the bogies) with a maximum weight of 12 tons.
The coaches were fitted with vacuum brakes and steam pipes for heating and were mostly used on the overnight runs to Scotland.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

TCV Newton Chambers Car Carrier BR Blue/Grey Early E96297E
Heljan has announced a new range of 'OO' gauge coach packs featuring the Newton Chambers double-deck car transporters used by British Rail in the 1960s. The models will be released in BR Lined Maroon and BR 'Motorail' Blue/Grey liveries, with each pack including three vehicles. The models will feature high-quality details, including separately fitted handbrake wheels, end door details, and air pipes.
The Newton Chambers car transporters were built between 1960 and 1961 and were originally designated as TCVs. They were later reclassified as NVV and NVX under the TOPS system. The vehicles featured a unique design, with a hydraulically operated central well capable of storing six cars.
The car transporters were used on a range of services, including those between London, York, and Edinburgh, as well as 'Motorail' services from London and northern England to the West of England. They were hauled by a variety of locomotives, including Class 40s, 45s, 46s, and 47s. The models will feature a range of details, including early and late rooflight arrangements, steam and dual heating parts, and vacuum and dual braking parts.
Each model will be supplied with NEM couplings and sprung buffers as standard. The models will be released in a pack format, with each pack including three vehicles with the same running number: E96291/294/299E. The Blue/Grey livery is a key feature of the models, representing the vehicles' later years of service.
