Prototype Era
Era 6 (1967 to 1972) British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS)
Built in 1961 by Newton Chambers, these unusual looking coaches were designed to carry up to 6 cars per coach (4 on the upper deck and 2 in the well between the bogies) with a maximum weight of 12 tons.
The coaches were fitted with vacuum brakes and steam pipes for heating and were mostly used on the overnight runs to Scotland.
* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Heljan is expanding its range of OO gauge rolling stock with six coach packs of Newton Chambers-built car transporters for British Rail's Eastern Region. The models will be released in three packs, each featuring three vehicles, and will depict the car transporters in their BR Lined Maroon and BR Motorail Blue/Grey liveries.
The models will be highly detailed, with features including separately fitted handbrake wheels, end door details, air pipes, etched train ferry lashing eyes, steam heat, vacuum brake and ETH equipment. NEM couplers and sprung buffers will be fitted as standard.
The Newton Chambers car transporters were built in 1960 and 1961 for use on the East Coast Main Line, initially between London, York and Edinburgh. They were later used on Motorail services from London and northern England to the West of England. The models will depict the vehicles in their original vacuum-braked configuration, as well as later dual-braked versions with ETH and air brake equipment.
The specifications for the models include a minimum radius curve of 2 feet, NEM couplings, and a running number of E96290/297/298E. The models will be suitable for use with British Rail Blue (Pre-TOPS) era layouts.
