Manufacturer description
Fruit D wagons were large ventilated wooden bodied vans designed for the fast and efficient transportation of fruit. They were first constructed in the 1930s for GWR use and later (early 1950s) a batch was commissioned by BR.
The vans themselves had three large double side doors to enable easy loading and unloading and were usually seen as part of passenger or fast goods trains. Often when out of the fruit season, these vans were also used as parcel and luggage vans. As road transport took over as the principal means of conveying fruit, fruit D vans were modified and used as permanent parcel or stores vans and remained in service in this way until the early 1980s.

The Dapol model of a Fruit D Van is an unpainted representation of a classic British railway wagon. The model features a highly detailed body and finely moulded design. It has a length of 82mm, a width of 33mm, and a height of 48mm.
The model is designed to be used with a minimum radius curve of 1, and features NEM pockets with self-centring couplings for ease of use. The Fruit D Van was a type of ventilated wooden bodied van used for the transportation of fruit, first introduced in the 1930s for Great Western Railway (GWR) use and later by British Railways (BR) in the early 1950s.
The vans were typically used on passenger or fast goods trains, and were often seen with three large double side doors for easy loading and unloading. They were also used as parcel and luggage vans during the off-season. The Fruit D Van remained in service until the early 1980s, with many being modified and used as permanent parcel or stores vans as road transport became the primary means of fruit transportation.
