Manufacturer description

Due to changes in legislature, the transport of cattle and other livestock traditionally performed by rail was changed in a very short space of time to road. This resulted in large numbers of redundant cattle wagons. Many of these wagons were converted for alternative uses and one such was the Fruit Mex which was produced by adding slatted panels to the top section of the body of a standard GWR Mex B 8 ton cattle wagon.

In this form it was ideally suited to cope with the considerable amounts of fresh fruit traffic, particularly strawberries from the West Country and Vale of Evesham. These wagons carried the simple appellation ‘Fruit’ to identify them, and an identical build was also used to carry ale casks.

Dapol Fruit Mex Wagon BR B833359 is a OO‑scale model representing a British Railways early crest period wagon. It is supplied in the BR bauxite livery and measures 33mm wide, 48mm high and 88mm long. The manufacturer part number is 4F‑015‑007.

The model depicts a former GWR Mex B 8‑ton cattle wagon that was converted by fitting slatted panels to the upper body. Following legislative changes that moved livestock transport from rail to road, many redundant cattle wagons were repurposed, and this conversion created the Fruit Mex type.

In its fruit configuration the wagon was used for large volumes of fresh fruit, notably strawberries from the West Country and the Vale of Evesham. The wagons bore the simple designation “Fruit” and an identical construction was also employed for transporting ale casks.
