More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

Dapol Stroudley Terrier A1X Class BR Lined Black Early Crest 0‑6‑0 Tank Locomotive No 32655 is a limited‑edition OO‑scale model released as part of the Rails of Sheffield range. The locomotive is presented in a pristine lined‑black livery with the early British Railways crest and carries the running number 32655. It measures 55 mm in length, runs on a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor and is equipped with DCC sound via a NEXT‑18 socket; the factory‑fitted sound is a recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The model uses a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic‑moulded body with a flickering firebox, and die‑cast wheels with sprung centre drivers for improved electrical pickup and traction.

The model represents the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1X “Terrier”, a 0‑6‑0T steam tank engine designed by William Stroudley and built between 1872 and 1880. Original locomotives were employed on main‑line duties before being displaced by newer engines and electrification; most later served on branch lines and for shunting, with the final member withdrawn on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on 31 November 1963. Of the original 50, ten survive in preservation.
