Locomotive background Information
More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.
With all the experience Dapol has gained from making the award winning O Gauge version of the A1 / A1X Terrier it is fully anticipated that this project will progress very quickly. Decorated samples are expected to be available in time for Warley 2018.
General Specification
The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/buner types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal break brake rigging where appropriate.
* Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking

* Class names often change over the lifespan of a locomotive, so this is not necessarily the class name used by the operator in the period modelled.

Dapol A1X SECR Lined Livery DCC fitted – a limited‑edition model released as part of the Rails of Sheffield range. It is an OO‑gauge locomotive, DCC fitted, with a pristine finish in a lined green colour scheme and carries the running number 751. The model measures 55 mm in length.
Technical specifications include a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor, NEM couplings and a minimum curve radius of 371 mm (first radius). The locomotive is represented as a steam‑powered engine built between 1872 and 1880, of which 17 were produced in the real class. It depicts the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway A1X “Terrier”, later operated by the South Eastern & Chatham Railway, with a 0‑6‑0T wheel arrangement. The design is credited to William Stroudley and the manufacturer part number is 4S‑010‑003D. The period represented is pre‑grouping.
The original LB&SCR A1 class, designed by Stroudley, comprised 50 locomotives built at the Brighton Works from 1872 to 1880. Known as “Terriers” because of the bark‑like exhaust note, they served on main lines before being displaced by newer engines and electrification. Many were later used on branch lines and for shunting, remaining in service until the 1960s; the final locomotive was withdrawn on the Hayling Island line on 11/11/1963. Ten examples survive in preservation.
Model construction features a die‑cast chassis and running plate, a detailed plastic moulded body, and numerous separately fitted components. Die‑cast wheels with a sprung centre provide better electrical pick‑up and traction. The locomotive is DCC and sound ready, with easy access to a NEXT‑18 socket via a removable body. Factory‑fitted sound uses Dapol’s own recording (catalogue 32678) of the Kent and East Sussex Railway, and RealDrive braking is included on sound‑fitted units. All wheels are electrically pick‑up capable.
