Manufacturer description

More formally known as the London, Brighton & South Coast (LB&SCR) A1 Class, this locomotive became affectionately known as the Terrier due to the distinct bark of the exhaust. The class was designed by William Stroudley and 50 were built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works in Sussex. The original workings of the locomotive on the main London Lines of the class were eventually displaced by newer and more powerful locomotives and by the LB&SCR electrification scheme. Some of the locomotives were sold to other operators but most were used for Branchline work and non revenue generating operations such as shunting. In this role the class continued in service until the 1960’s with the final active locomotive being decommissioned on the Hayling Island Line in Hampshire on November 1963. In all 10 Terriers survive into preservation.

Specification: The tooling allows for most variations of the A1, A1X and IOW variants of the locomotive to be produced, including two cab/bunker types, two smokebox/boilers. Wooden and metal brake rigging where appropriate.

*Factory sound fitted locomotives will feature RealDrive braking control

The locomotive is DCC fitted, with a five‑pole skew‑wound motor, and carries the running number 2644 in a pristine lined‑green finish. The chassis and running plate are die‑cast, and the body is detailed plastic moulded with a flickering firebox and many separately fitted components.

The model measures 55 mm in length, uses NEM couplings and can negotiate a minimum curve radius of 371 mm (first radius). Die‑cast wheels with sprung centre driving wheels provide all‑wheel electrical pickup and improved traction. DCC and sound are ready via a removable body that exposes a NEXT‑18 socket; factory‑fitted versions include Dapol’s own sound recording of locomotive 32678 on the Kent and East Sussex Railway, together with RealDrive braking control.

The prototype represents the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LB&SCR) A1X “Terrier” class, designed by William Stroudley and built between 1872 and 1880 at the Brighton Works. Seventeen of the original 0‑6‑0T locomotives were produced for the Southern Railway; they served on main lines, branch lines and shunting duties until the early 1960s, the last being withdrawn on the Hayling Island Line in November 1963. Ten examples survive in preservation.
