Manufacturer description

An Autocoach could often be seen being propelled down many branch lines by a variety of Auto fitted Locomotives. The driving cab on the Autocoach meant that the locomotive could be controlled from there and negated the requirement to run the locomotive round at the end of the journey.

These models are based on the six coaches numbered 36 to 41 constructed during 1907 under Lot 1126 to Diagram ‘N ’. They were built new as driving trailers and not later conversions from old steam rail motors. These coaches were used on branch lines from Cornwall to Wales and retained their gas lighting until they were withdrawn by November 1957.

Prototype information

Dapol Autocoach BR W38 Maroon is a 1:76 scale model of a British Railways Autocoach in the traditional BR maroon livery. The model is DCC ready, includes interior lighting and carries the manufacturer part number 4P‑004‑007. It represents the late‑crest period of British Railways after 1948.

The prototype coaches, numbered 36 to 41, were built in 1907 under Lot 1126 to Diagram ‘N’. They were constructed as driving trailers rather than converted from earlier steam rail motors and operated on branch lines from Cornwall to Wales. These coaches retained gas lighting until their withdrawal in November 1957.
