Prototype Era
Era 2 (1875 to 1923) Pre-grouping
Containers and the special wooden decked conflat wagons used to convey them were produced in great numbers by all four of the railway companies. They allowed door to door deliveries via road, rail and road again without the goods to be unloaded at each leg. Post nationalisation, BR built over 20,000 conflat wagons and these continued into service until the arrival of modern standard ISO containers in the 1960’s.

Dapol Conflat & Container Curtiss & Sons is an OO gauge model of a four‑wheel conflat wagon with a minimum radius curve of 1. The wagon was originally built by GWR Swindon Works for British Railways and carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑037‑108. The model represents the pre‑grouping period.
Conflat wagons and their wooden decked containers were produced in large numbers by the four main railway companies before nationalisation. They enabled door‑to‑door deliveries by road, rail and road again without unloading the goods at each stage. After nationalisation British Railways built more than 20,000 conflat wagons, which remained in service until modern ISO containers appeared in the 1960s.
The Dapol model includes a finely moulded body and a separate container, both finished in accurately applied livery and printed detail. Wheels are profile‑shaped and the kit supplies NEM pockets with self‑centering couplings.
