Manufacturer description

Containers and the special wooden decked conflat wagons used to convey them were produced in great numbers by all four of the railway companies. They allowed door to door deliveries via road, rail and road again without the requirement for the goods to be handled at each leg.

In the main they were used for furniture removal, although some were modified to be used with ice as refrigerated containers. Post nationalisation BR built over 20,000 conflat wagons and these continued into service until the arrival of the modern standard ISO containers in the 1960s.

Dapol C & G Ayres Conflat Wagon & Container is a highly detailed OO gauge model representing a four‑wheel conflat wagon and its accompanying container. It replicates a vehicle built at GWR Swindon Works for British Railways, bearing the manufacturer part number 4F‑037‑104 and intended to illustrate the era of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

The original conflat wagons were produced in large numbers by all four pre‑nationalisation companies and later by British Railways, which built over 20,000 of them. Designed for door‑to‑door deliveries, they were chiefly used for furniture removal, with some units adapted for ice as refrigerated containers. The wagons remained in service until the introduction of modern ISO containers in the 1960s.

Key features of the model include profiled wheels, a separate container, accurate printed livery, NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, and finely moulded body and chassis details. The dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high. This model offers a precise addition to any OO gauge rolling stock collection.
