Manufacturer description

Containers and the special wooden decked conflat wagons used to convey them were produced in great numbers by all four of the railway companies. They allowed door to door deliveries via road, rail and road again without the requirement for the goods to be handled at each leg.

In the main they were used for furniture removal, although some were modified to be used with ice as refrigerated containers. Post nationalisation BR built over 20,000 conflat wagons and these continued into service until the arrival of the modern standard ISO containers in the 1960s.

Dapol C & G Ayres Conflat Wagon & Container – Weathered is an OO gauge model (part number 4F‑037‑105) representing a four‑wheel, weathered‑finish conflat wagon built by GWR Swindon Works for British Railways. The model has a minimum radius of Curve 1 and is supplied with a separate container.

The prototype wagons and containers were produced in large numbers by the four pre‑nationalisation railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR). They enabled door‑to‑door delivery by road and rail without handling the goods at each transfer point. Primarily used for furniture removal, some units were adapted as refrigerated containers for ice. After nationalisation, British Railways built over 20 000 conflat wagons, which remained in service until the introduction of ISO containers in the 1960s.

The Dapol model is highly detailed, featuring profiled wheels, superbly printed livery, NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings and finely moulded body and chassis. Measurements are 82 mm long over buffers, 33 mm wide and 48 mm high.
