Containers and the special wooden decked conflat wagons used to convey them were produced in great numbers by all four of the railway companies. They allowed door to door deliveries via road, rail and road again without the requirement for the goods to be handled at each leg.
In the main they were used for furniture removal, although some were modified to be used with ice as refrigerated containers. Post nationalisation BR built over 20,000 conflat wagons and these continued into service until the arrival of the modern standard ISO containers in the 1960s.

Dapol Conflat & Container SR K584 Weathered is a OO‑scale model of a British Railways conflat wagon with a weathered finish. The model has a minimum radius curve of Radius 1, a four‑wheel arrangement and is reproduced from a design built at GWR Swindon Works for British Railways. It carries the manufacturer part number 4F‑037‑006 and represents the early British Railways crest period.
Conflat wagons and their accompanying wooden‑decked containers were produced in large numbers by the four pre‑nationalisation railway companies. They enabled door‑to‑door transport of goods such as furniture, allowing transfer from road to rail and back without rehandling. After nationalisation the British Railways network built more than 20 000 of these wagons, which remained in use until modern ISO containers appeared in the 1960s.
The Dapol model includes a separate container and features profiled wheels, NEM pockets with self‑centring couplings, and a highly detailed body and chassis moulding. The livery and markings are printed with a high level of fidelity. Overall dimensions are 82 mm in length over buffers, 33 mm in width and 48 mm in height.
