Manufacturer description

The Class 45s were built at British Rail’s Derby and Crewe Works between 1960 and 1962. They were a development of the Class 44 and, together with the Class 46, the three classes were collectively known as the ‘Peaks’. As built the entire class was fitted with multiple-working equipment and steam-heat boilers but some later had their boilers removed and were fitted with electric train heating (ETH). With the implementation of TOPS in 1971, the steam-heat locos were designated Class 45/0 and the ETH fitted examples became 45/1s. From 1975, during works visits the locomotives began to have their head-code equipment removed and this was replaced with sheet metal and two sealed beam marker lights and it is in this condition that our Class 45/0s are modelled. Although withdrawals of the Class 45 fleet began in the early-1980s, No. 45040 was one of the longest surviving examples and was not withdrawn until July 1987.

Available from Bachmann retailers in the following areas: Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, City of Bristol & North Somerset, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, South Cheshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Ireland and Wales.

Bachmann Class 45/0 locomotive 45040, named “The King’s Shropshire Light Infantry”, is presented in pristine condition with a British Rail blue livery and a 21‑pin DCC ready socket. The model carries the original running number 45040, is diesel‑powered and represents a BR Blue (TOPS) period locomotive. It is based on the British Rail Class 45 built between 1960 and 1962, with a maximum speed of 90 mph, and bears the manufacturer part number 32‑684DB.

The real Class 45s were produced at Derby and Crewe Works as a development of the earlier Class 44, and together with Class 46 were known as the ‘Peaks’. Initially fitted with multiple‑working equipment and steam‑heat boilers, many were later converted to electric train heating and re‑classified under TOPS in 1971 as 45/0 (steam‑heat) and 45/1 (electric heating). During the mid‑1970s head‑code apparatus was removed and replaced by sheet‑metal and sealed‑beam marker lights, the configuration modelled on this version. No. 45040 survived longer than most of its class, not being withdrawn until July 1987.

The model is available from Bachmann retailers across England, Wales, Ireland and the Midlands, including Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Bristol, Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, Oxfordshire, Shropshire, South Cheshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire and surrounding regions.
