HISTORY
Clayton has supplied variations of its CBD80/90 hybrid battery-diesel loco to a number of industrial users with an initial build of 5 for Tata Steel, 2 for Sellafield and 15 for Beacon Rail with more expected in the future. Clayton and Beacon hope that the Class 18 will begin to replace elderly Class 08s as the modern yard shunter of choice.
The 15 Beacon locos have been assigned to Class 18 on the rail network and are expected to be hired out to freight operators in a number of industrial and yard locations. 18001 is currently on test at the Chasewater Railway with Clayton delivering further Class 18s from now until mid-2023.
Revolution have an exclusive licence from Beacon to use their logo and branding on the Class 18s, plus an agreement from Tata Steel.

Revolution Trains Ltd are producing a limited‑edition OO gauge model of the Clayton Engineering Class 18 CBD80 / CBD90 hybrid battery‑diesel shunting locomotive, marketed as the Tata Steel Hybrid Battery Diesel Locomotive No. 932 (Version B) with DCC sound. The model is part of the “Rails of Sheffield” series and carries the manufacturer part number RT‑CBD90‑TS‑B‑SF. It represents the current era and includes interior cabin lighting.
The model is available for pre‑order exclusively via the Rails website. CAD work is in progress and further images will be released shortly. Production is scheduled to commence later next year, with an expected ship date in late 2026 or early 2023, according to the company’s timetable.
Clayton Engineering has supplied a small fleet of CBD80/90 hybrid locomotives to industrial customers – five to Tata Steel, two to Sellafield and fifteen to Beacon Rail – with the intention that the Class 18 replace older Class 08 shunters. Beacon’s fifteen units have been allocated to the Class 18 designation and are being hired to freight operators. One unit, 18001, is currently undergoing testing on the Chasewater Railway, and further deliveries are planned through mid‑2023.
