HISTORY

Clayton has supplied variations of its CBD80/90 hybrid battery-diesel loco to a number of industrial users with an initial build of 5 for Tata Steel, 2 for Sellafield and 15 for Beacon Rail with more expected in the future. Clayton and Beacon hope that the Class 18 will begin to replace elderly Class 08s as the modern yard shunter of choice.

The 15 Beacon locos have been assigned to Class 18 on the rail network and are expected to be hired out to freight operators in a number of industrial and yard locations. 18001 is currently on test at the Chasewater Railway with Clayton delivering further Class 18s from now until mid-2023.

Revolution have an exclusive licence from Beacon to use their logo and branding on the Class 18s, plus an agreement from Tata Steel.

Revolution Trains Clayton Class 18 / CBD90 Tata Steel Hybrid Battery Diesel Locomotive No.932 (Version B) is a limited‑edition OO‑gauge model released under the "Rails of Sheffield" series. The model carries the manufacturer part number RT‑CBD90‑TS‑B and represents the current era of railway practice. It is supplied with DCC 21 electronics and includes interior lighting.

The locomotive is a hybrid battery‑diesel shunter based on the real Clayton Class 18 (CBD80/90) used by industrial operators such as Tata Steel, Sellafield and Beacon Rail. The prototype has been built for yard duties, intended to replace older Class 08 shunters. One unit (18001) is on test at the Chasewater Railway, with further deliveries scheduled up to mid‑2023.

Production features an injection‑moulded plastic body and bogies, with photo‑etched grilles, wire handrails, and fine plastic detailing where appropriate. The chassis is a heavy cast metal footplate block with a smooth 5‑pole 12 V DC motor, metal gearboxes and brass axle bearings. Power is collected from all wheels and the model is designed for straightforward conversion to EM/P4 standards.

Electrical equipment includes a high‑quality printed circuit board with a 21‑pin DCC interface offering Stay‑Alive and Anti‑Flicker functions. The model is equipped with functional forward cab and buffer‑beam white headlights, red tail lights, and optional solid or flashing warning lights, all LED‑based and controllable via DCC. A fully painted cab interior with switchable interior lighting is provided, together with softly sprung buffers and functional tension‑lock couplers mounted in NEM 362 sockets.

Pre‑orders are available exclusively through Rails, with CAD work already in progress and images to be released shortly. The model is expected to be ready for shipment in late 2023 or early 2024. A DCC sound project for the locomotive has been recorded by Legomanbiffo.
