HISTORY
Clayton has supplied variations of its CBD80/90 hybrid battery-diesel loco to a number of industrial users with an initial build of 5 for Tata Steel, 2 for Sellafield and 15 for Beacon Rail with more expected in the future. Clayton and Beacon hope that the Class 18 will begin to replace elderly Class 08s as the modern yard shunter of choice.
The 15 Beacon locos have been assigned to Class 18 on the rail network and are expected to be hired out to freight operators in a number of industrial and yard locations. 18001 is currently on test at the Chasewater Railway with Clayton delivering further Class 18s from now until mid-2023.
Revolution have an exclusive licence from Beacon to use their logo and branding on the Class 18s, plus an agreement from Tata Steel.

Revolution Trains are releasing a limited‑edition OO gauge model of the Clayton Engineering Class 18 CBD80 / CBD90 hybrid battery‑diesel shunting locomotive, supplied under the Rails of Sheffield series. The model carries the manufacturer part number RT‑CBD90‑TS‑A‑SF, includes DCC sound, interior lighting and a working forward cab with LED headlights, tail‑lights and warning lights. It is built to 1:76.2 scale with an injection‑moulded plastic body, heavy cast metal chassis, 12 V DC motor, brass axle bearings and a 21‑pin DCC PCB featuring Stay‑Alive and Anti‑Flicker functions.
The locomotive is a current‑era design used by industrial operators such as Tata Steel, Sellafield and Beacon Rail, where it is intended to replace older Class 08 shunters. Clayton has produced a small number of the real units and expects further deliveries through mid‑2023. Revolution Trains have an exclusive licence from Beacon and an agreement with Tata Steel to use their branding on the model.
Pre‑orders are available exclusively through Rails, with CAD work already in progress and promotional images to be released soon. Shipping is forecast for late 2024 or early 2025. The model is supplied with functional tension‑lock couplers in NEM 362 sockets and an optional accessory pack containing a painted buffing plate, cosmetic coupler hook and shackle. A DCC sound project for the locomotive has been recorded by Legomanbiffo.
