Designed by Wilson Worsdell, the NER P3 class would later be reclassified under the LNER to J27. The J27 was a modification of the earlier NER P2 (LNER J26), the biggest changes were in the depth of the firebox and shallower sloping grate. 115 engines in total were built and over their working careers received many modifications. The class were built to handle long distance freight and mineral trains but were soon displaced once larger engines started to be built. The design proved to be robust and a very capable workhorse, pulling heavy coal trains, with the last J27 being withdrawn in September 1967. Only one example survives of the class still suvives; number 65894 which was purchased by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group directly from BR on 1st December 1967.

Oxford Class J27 BR Black (Late) 0‑6‑0 Steam Locomotive No 65817 – DCC Sound model, released in the 2019 range. The locomotive is fitted with DCC sound equipment, carries the late British Railways crest livery and is presented in a pristine finish. It represents the NER P3/J27 class as it appeared in the late BR era, with running number 65817 and wheel arrangement 0‑6‑0.

The J27 class was designed by Wilson Worsdell as a development of the earlier NER P2 (LNER J26) and featured a deeper firebox and a shallower sloping grate. A total of 115 examples were built for long‑distance freight and mineral work, remaining in service until the last member was withdrawn in September 1967. Only one original locomotive survives, number 65894, which was acquired by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group on 1 December 1967.
