Designed by Wilson Worsdell, the NER P3 class would later be reclassified under the LNER to J27. The J27 was a modification of the earlier NER P2 (LNER J26), the biggest changes were in the depth of the firebox and shallower sloping grate. 115 engines in total were built and over their working careers received many modifications. The class were built to handle long distance freight and mineral trains but were soon displaced once larger engines started to be built. The design proved to be robust and a very capable workhorse, pulling heavy coal trains, with the last J27 being withdrawn in September 1967. Only one example survives of the class still suvives; number 65894 which was purchased by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group directly from BR on 1st December 1967.

Oxford Class J27 LNER Black 0-6-0 Steam Locomotive No 1010 – DCC Sound is a 2019 range model that comes fitted with DCC sound capability. It is presented in the LNER Black livery with the running number 1010 and a pristine paint finish.

The model replicates a J27 class locomotive, originally designed by Wilson Worsdell as the NER P3 and later reclassified under the LNER. It features a 0‑6‑0 wheel arrangement and carries the manufacturer part number OR76J27001XS. The kit represents the locomotive during the period of the Big Four railway companies (LNER, LMS, GWR and SR).

Historically 115 engines of the J27 class were built for long‑distance freight and mineral work. The design proved robust, handling heavy coal trains until larger engines superseded it. The last J27 was withdrawn in September 1967; only one example survives – number 65894, purchased by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group on 1 December 1967.
