Prototype Era
Era 4 (1948 to 1956) British Railways Early Crest

Manufacturer description

Having been neglected during the wartime years while based at Grantham Shed, numbered as 22 and having been paired with a Corridor Tender, Mallard's prestige was restored with a move back to Kings Cross on 11 April, 1948 and was the last A4 to regain the Garter Blue Livery.

British Railways experimented with their own versions of Blue and on 16 September, 1949, Mallard, now numbered 60022, emerged from Doncaster Works in the new BR Blue for Steam Locomotives.

Hornby BR A4 Class 4‑6‑2 locomotive, running number 60022 ‘Mallard’, issued in Era 4. The model is built to OO gauge, measures 291 mm in length and features a 5‑pole skew‑wound motor. It is DCC ready with an 8‑pin socket and uses NEM couplings. Power is collected via the driving and leading wheels and the tender. The livery is British Railways Blue, colour blue, with a pristine finish and a manufacturer part number R3737.

The prototype was built in March 1938 by the London & North Eastern Railway at Doncaster, designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. It served the British Railways network for 25 years, withdrawn in April 1963, and could reach a maximum speed of 90 mph. Historically, Mallard was restored to its Garter Blue livery on 11 April 1948 after wartime neglect, and on 16 September 1949 it appeared in the new BR Blue for steam locomotives.

The model is produced under licence for SCMG Enterprises Ltd and each purchase supports the museum.
